A perfectly hot sunny day down on the Rye as we hosted the Emu’s for a re-match of last years semi-final.
Giants got off to a flying start with an early goal to Geoff Mackay. It was back and forth for the rest of the quarter with Michael McCagh and Patrick Godfrey a brick wall up back not allowing anything through. Some great movement from the backline saw Matthew Pert on the end of one kicking his first goal for the day right on quarter time to see the Giants leading 13-4.
The second quarter saw another strong start from the Giants putting on a lot of pressure but unable to convert. Stuart Tolley providing plenty of run and Bradley Kent putting on some big hits on the wing. The pressure continued to build which saw quick goals to Geoff Mackay and Ben Hislop with another long range missile after assist of the season from Joseph Arthur. Giants went into half time leading 30-4.
The 3rd quarter saw the Emu’s come out strong with 2 early goals. The Giants never dropped their heads and fought back well with Hubert Schwandt providing the energy in the middle. Some crafty forward work from Stuart Tolley ending up with Alec Dufraisse finishing off a nice goal and Geoff Mackay snapping his 3rd soon after. At ¾ time the Giants went in leading 43-17.
The 4th quarter saw the Giants kicking with the wind. Dave "pipes" Little had the ball on a string on the wing slotting a long range goal from 50 and then soon after a kick snap for his second - big showing against his old club. Brett Boyle then got one on a plate to put through his first. The backline continue to provide pressure and making it hard for the Emu’s to score with special mentions for Connor Lorrigan, Toby "T-Bone" Shackleton, Matt Allen and a great debut from Louis Cronin. Joseph Arthur then roved the pack late to slot through a classy goal to put the game to bed.
Final score ended up 67-27. A true team performance from the Giants with everyone playing their part. Be Giant.
